Madeira Cruise Excursions: How to See the Island in 4 Hours

8 June 2026 7 min

Most cruise ships dock in Funchal for 6–10 hours. That's not a lot — but with a private driver who knows the island, it's enough to see far more than the ship's group tours will let you.

Below are three realistic itineraries I run regularly for cruise passengers, based on your time in port.

If you have 4 hours

Stay close to Funchal. Cable car up to Monte, wicker toboggan down, then drive to Cabo Girão for the skywalk and back through Câmara de Lobos for a poncha. Time to spare at the cruise terminal for shopping.

If you have 6 hours

The classic east-west day. Pickup at the terminal, drive west to Cabo Girão, Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava. Cross to the north via Encumeada and visit Seixal's black-sand beach. Return via the inland road. You'll be back on board with 30 minutes to spare before all-aboard.

If you have 8 hours or more

The full island. Add Porto Moniz (volcanic pools), Fanal forest and a quick stop at Pico do Areeiro (weather permitting) for the view above the clouds. This is the day most cruise passengers wish they had booked.

Why book privately rather than through the ship

  • Smaller vehicle = more photo stops and less time loading/unloading
  • Itinerary built around what you want, not a 50-person bus schedule
  • Direct contact with the driver — flexible if the weather changes
  • Usually 30-50% cheaper than the ship's equivalent tour
  • We track your ship's berthing time and guarantee you're back well before all-aboard

What you need to tell us when booking

  • Cruise line and ship name
  • Arrival time in Funchal and all-aboard time
  • Group size and any mobility considerations
  • What you'd most like to see (we'll tailor the route)

Cruise visits to Madeira are short by definition — but with the right plan, it's enough to fall in love with the island. See our cruise excursions for set itineraries, or contact us for a custom plan built around your ship's exact schedule.
